UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Orgainzation) https://en.unesco.org currently  lists 981 sites around the world as places of historic, cultural and natural heritage having universal value. This website http://whc.unesco.org/en/list provides a list, maps and the criterion for why each location was deemed worthy of being included.  Also worth noting that occasionally places are "delisted", usually because development encroaches on the very nature of the place to the point of detracting from its unique heritage.
