UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) https://en.unesco.org currently lists 981 sites around the world as places of historic, cultural, and natural heritage having universal value. This website http://whc.unesco.org/en/list provides a list, maps, and the criterion for why each location was deemed worthy of being included. Also worth noting is that occasionally places are "delisted", usually because development encroaches on the very nature of the place to the point of detracting from its unique heritage.
